It is no secret, the natural gas and oil production industries are among some of the most dangerous businesses in the world. The materials being produced are delicate, and the equipment used in these facilities can be dangerous. This is why safety is so often stressed in these types of production plants.
Keeping your facility workers safe should be your top priority as a production manager. Here are four tips that we think you should be implementing in your facility in order to ensure the safety of your employees.
1. Proper Education and Safety Training
Take the time out of your company’s busy schedule to squeeze in safety education and training courses. Collaborate with local emergency response teams that can step in and properly display safety procedures and emergency actions that can be taken in specific situations. During these programs, encourage participation and open communication. Making sure that your employees are comfortable is key to this tip working.
2. Monitor the Mental Health of Your Workers
While the oil and gas industries are all about the promotion of the “Strongman” and always being ready for the job, make sure that you are keeping tabs on the mental health of your employees. Everyone gets exhausted and stressed; and in a work environment that can seem overtly masculine at times, people may not want to speak out about their situation.
Staying quiet can lead to further exhaustion and injury or death on the job. Discourage your workers from internalizing their emotions and you will be on the road to a mentally healthier workplace that is practicing proper safety.
3. Clear and Visual Communication
You can have all the signs that you deem necessary posted around your facility and they can still be no good. Proper signage is going to be visually clear and communicative. Utilize universal symbols or easy-to-understand art. If words need to be printed on the signs, make sure that the message is succinct and to the point.
Also, keep track of where your production facility is. If you are working offshore, you want to ensure that your signage has the ability to represent workers of all languages and cultures.
4. Stay On Top of Machinery Maintenance
Machinery at your location should always be in proper working order. When working with natural gas coolers and more, you want to make sure that your workers are always safe. Not only does premature machine failure cost your plant tons of money, but it puts your workers at severe risk.
Please, make sure that you have constant maintenance reviews of your equipment. The sooner you are able to find a problem, the smaller it may be, and the easier it may be to fix. This results in an organized and safe working environment.
