Hydraulic fracturing, or ‘fracking’ is a practice that the United States has been trying to carry out in responsible, eco-friendly ways. Sadly, the average practice of this process is known for failing to ease public and EPA concerns and also has a habit of setting off earthquakes.
One of the leading movements in the current industry is the push toward eco-friendly fracking methods, or, ‘green fracking.’ The technology behind these ideas is interesting, and that is why Pro-Gas is proud to show off some of these practices to our clients. We stay updated with the current trends in the oil and gas industry so you don’t have to.
Elimination of Diesel Fumes in Fracking
Diesel fumes found in many types of drilling equipment are the source of several harmful pollutants. Pollutants like particulates and carbon emissions are specific pollutants that directly contribute to global warming.
Some Texas-based site operators are attempting to practice green fracking by powering their jobs with engines that rely on natural gas. Not only do these types of operations help reduce emissions but it also helps the sites save money because diesel fuel is a pricey resource.
Water-Free Alternatives
One of the biggest materials used in fracking is water. Fracking usually uses freshwater but has lately begun to try its hand in working with recycled and even water-free methods.
In order to practice fracking water-free, a gelled fluid created with propane is used. This gel is actually more effective than water because it only requires 1/8 of the liquid to operate a machine and is able to safely merge into the flow that is being extracted on-site.
The Treatment of Wastewater
Even though oil is the main goal of many fracking sites, wastewater is usually what comes up during production. Instead of overlooking this opportunity, sites are now attempting to use the CleanWave treatment system that removes unwanted particles from the water on-site. This on-site, sustainable treatment allows for the wastewater to safely be used while also preventing the contamination of local freshwater.
Putting a Plug in Methane Leaks
Methane is one of the leading greenhouse gases that these fracking efforts are trying to avoid. Working hand-in-hand with EPA regulations in 2019, U.S. oil and gas sites will focus on using equipment that is specifically designed to reduce overall emissions.
